New Delhi, April 3, 2026: Strong earthquake tremors were felt across Delhi-NCR and several parts of North India on Friday night after a 5.9 magnitude earthquake struck Afghanistan.
According to initial seismic reports, the earthquake occurred at approximately 8:42 PM local time in Afghanistan (9:42 PM IST). The tremors lasted for a few seconds but were strong enough to send panic among residents in high-rise buildings and densely populated areas.
📍 Tremors Felt Across North India
Residents in cities including Delhi, Noida, Gurugram, Ghaziabad, Chandigarh, and parts of Punjab and Haryana reported noticeable shaking. Many people rushed out of their homes and offices as a precaution.
Eyewitnesses described ceiling fans swaying, furniture vibrating, and mild structural rattling during the tremors.
“It lasted around 5–10 seconds, but it was enough to make us step outside immediately,” said a resident of Gurugram.

The earthquake’s epicentre was located in Afghanistan, a region known for frequent seismic activity due to tectonic plate movements. The depth and location allowed seismic waves to travel across borders, impacting parts of India.

As of now, there are no immediate reports of major damage or casualties in India. Authorities are monitoring the situation closely.

Even though the earthquake originated in Afghanistan, seismic waves can travel long distances, especially when the magnitude is above 5.5. Northern India, being relatively closer and geologically sensitive, often feels such distant earthquakes.
